Auditions for The Last Unicorn

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for The Last Unicorn!

About the production: The Last Unicorn is a world premiere stage adaptation of the fantasy novel of the same name by Peter S. Beagle, adapted and directed by ensemble member Ed Rutherford. It tells the tale of the Unicorn: the most beautiful creature in the world, immortal, and magical besides. When she hears from a pair of hunters traveling through her forest that she is the last of her kind, she goes on a quest to discover what's become of her missing people. Along the way she encounters Schmendrick, a well meaning but singularly inept magician, and Molly Grue, a scullery maid with a sharp tongue but a soft heart. Their journey includes encounters with witches, harpies, butterflies, wizards, talking cats and skulls, and the most fearsome opponent of all: the Red Bull. Or so the Unicorn supposes. Due to a miscast spell, her most terrible foe may be the human form to which she is now confined.

You may also be a familiar with this story due to the animated version that was made in the 80s. Although this is an adaptation of the novel, the author also wrote the screenplay for that version and so there are many similarities between the two.

The approach we plan to take with this adaptation draws heavily on the Chicago Story Theater aesthetic. The productions of Mary Zimmerman, for example, have heavily influenced our adapter's approach. The piece will incorporate narration, movement, some song, masks and puppets and will involve an ensemble of actors playing many roles throughout the performance. Every actor will have featured moments, but can also expect some time pretending to be trees and other assorted scenery.

Important Production Dates: The first rehearsal for The Last Unicorn will be after Labor Day weekend, on or near Tuesday 9/8. We will rehearse on weeknights or on weekends during the day, between 4 and 6 nights a week. Tech rehearsal for the show begins on Monday 10/12.
